In terms of how the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were used, the reading passage and the lecture are contradictory to each other.

For the first theory, the reading passage states that the Chaco structures were purely residential because the earlier versions of the architecture resembles recent Southwest societies. The professor, on the contrary, believes that although the structures look like the later outside, they are different from each other inside. If the great houses were used for housing hundreds of people, there should have to be many fire places for daily cooking. However, in one of the great houses, there were fire places for only 10 families. And that was not enough for hundreds of people.

For the second theory, the reading passage suggests the great houses were some places where people could store food. It is suitable for maize to be stored there because of their size. By contrast, the lecture contends that there was no evidence to support this theory. If the great houses were places for storing maize, there should have traces of maize or maize containers. But excavations have not uncovered them.

For the third theory, the reading passage suggests that the great houses were used as ceremonial centers because excavations uncovered a large number of broken pots which might be used for ceremonies. However, the lecture argues that there were many building materials such as sands, stones even construction tools besides pots which indicated that the great houses were not used for ceremonies. They might be trash.
