Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading passage states that environment pollution can explain better than attacks by predators. However, this claim is not in agreement with that of the lecture, which suggests that predation is the most likely cause for the reduction of otters.

According to the reading passage, some known sources such as oil rigs pollute environment and that could directly cause otters’ death. The professor, on the contrary, indicates that no one can really find the evidence which support this theory. But the fact is consistent with the predator hypothesis. If otters were killed by predators, they would be eaten immediately so it cannot wash up on sea shore.

The seconde point of difference between the reading passage and the lecture concerns on the reduction of other sea mammals. The reading passage believes that it is environment pollution that affect the entire ecosystem rather than a single species. By contrast, the lecture makes the point that orcas have to change its diet to survive because human hunters kill whales. Thus, some small mammals such as sea lions and otter would be killed by orcas and that causes the reduction of the otters.

Finally, the professor does not agree with the view showed in the reading passage that uneven concentrations of pollution created by ocean currents of other environment factors may lead to uneven pattern of otter decline. She challenges the point by saying that it depends on where otters live is accessible to orcas or not. Orcas are so large that they cannot access shallow and rocky locations. Those places are precisely the types of locations where sea otter populations have not declined.
