托福写作批改:dormitory or house

Some students prefer to live on campus in a dormitory. Others prefer to live in an apartment or house off campus. Which do you prefer?

学生原文:

With only one year left before high school, I find myself facing the same choice that bothers many, to live on or off campus. Surely, mother would desire my staying at home, but life in a dorm seems fascinating. Weighing both sides carefully, I’ve reached a decision to live off campus, both in high school and university.

Foremost, students are able to indulge in a better living standard off campus. Dormitory life is so notoriously crowded that being assigned to a double room would be considered extremely lucky. Undoubtedly, bathrooms, lavatories as well as washing machines have to be shared. The very thought of having my fine dresses washed with others’ nasty underwear makes me sick. Moreover, there’s no guarantee of an amiable roommate. Sharing a room with some sarcastic pessimist for four years would be totally frustrating. On the contrary, living off campus is sure to offer comfort. Instead of being shoved into a tiny dorm, we are able to be in charge of our life. It’s up to us to decide where to live and whom to live with. Undeniably, the budget will be tight, but it’s worthy.

Furthermore, life off campus connects students to the society and serves as a stepstone between life at school and after graduation. Dormitory life hardly possesses any other advantage than its academic atmosphere. Being surrounded by only students and teachers, the dullness of life presents a distinct contradiction to the diversity of the society. The isolation is inclined to result in poor job prospects. In fact, plenty of graduates in China have been facing this problem already. On the other hand, living off campus stimulates students’ ability. Renting, cooking, searching for parking lots and choosing part-time jobs... Every detail awaits arrangement. Simulating the life of working adults, those students tend to be stronger, calmer and more competitive.

Finally, unbelievable as it seems, living off campus actually guarantees more safety. While external danger is blocked out by iron bars, internal threats are more treacherous and deadly on campus. The relationship among classmates and roommates is miserably delicate. Negative feelings represented by jealousy are like dangerous explosive, waiting to be ignited by a single accident. As a result, multiple poisonings in grand universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University have shaken the reputation of security on campus, leaving the public in dismay. Judging by the current circumstances, living off campus seems to be safer. As no place is of ultimate safety, visible threats are a lot better than undermining blights. Moreover, it can save us the trouble of racking the brain to maintain balance in the annoying student relationships.

By and large, we should think twice before living on campus. It indeed provides convenience, but the drawbacks exceed the advantages. Off-campus life, however, is both cozy and demanding, perfect for cultivating a hardy personality. My unwavering choice will always be living off campus.
