At this day and age, we are instructed to be polite to others since our childhood to show we are courteous, whereas, when come to the question that if we should do so all the time, there is scores of divergences. Personally speaking, I reckon it is rational to be polite all the time.
First, how you treat others might be reflected on your own if you are impolite to them. In other words, if you lost your courtesy and have a fight with others, they might do the same to you without any hesitation, consequently, nobody could be benefited from it. For instance, last semester when we were doing a group talking, there were two members arguing about a topic very fiercely. They were using very sharp words and even some body gestures to try to persuade each other. Obviously, they two were unable to force the other to take their own idea, then something unexpected happened. The two group members even fight with each others in the class, which took us lots of effort to pull one away from the other, and even worse, them were not friends any more. That accident intrigues me to think over that if they use more peaceful and polite way to commnuicate with each other, the outcome might not be like what I have experienced. Thus, when communicating with others, we should be discreet and politely to others to avoid any conflicts.
Second, to the elder, we should be polite as well to show our respect. When we talk to our parents or grandparents who have devoted their love and care since we are born, it is necessary to show our respect and politeness to them all the time. It is commonly acknowledged that China is country with long history which compromise many thought-provoking philosophy. Nevertheless, all of those philosophy possess something in common that is respecting the elder is obliged for the young for they have contributed their life to the society or even to you. We behave as the later generation is responsible to express our appreciation in the way being polite.
Admittedly, when confronting some thieves or some other bad man, we might take back our polite attitude and punish them with no hesitation. Whereas, it is just some unusual phenomenon might happen around us and we should believe there are more good people than the bad. Therefore, in daily lives, we should maintain our polite attitude to others.
To sum up, we are ought to treat people politely no matter they are older or younger because we carry such responsibility and it will bring no negative effect to us as well.
