The professor refutes the idea proposed in the passage. She is of the view that salvaging logging will not benefit the forest and economy in the long run.

First, the lecturer points out that the natural decomposition of the dead trees will enrich the soil and therefore make it a more suitable place for new trees to grow. However, if the remains of dead trees are removed rapidly, the soil may be lacking in nutrients. And thus the idea in the reading passage of salvage logging for space doesn't hold water.

In addition, the professor acknowledges that decaying wood does increase the population of insects such as the spruce bark beetle but also points out that these insects do little harm to the forest. In fact, the beetle has lived in the forest for 100 years without causing major damage to the forest. What's more, the decaying wood is also the habitat for other animals like birds. Thus, keeping the dead trees will bring more benefits in the long run.

Last but not least, the professor contradicts the potential economic benefits in the passage. She says, actually some severely damaged forests can only be recovered with a high cost, and thus the direct financial benefit is not as much as expected. Moreover, the job created by salavaging logging will prefer empolyees with training rather than local people, and therefore, it also fails to stimulate the economy.

The professor refutes the idea proposed in the passage. She is of the view that salvaging logging will not benefit the forest and economy in the long run. [

In fact, the beetle has lived in the forest for 100 years without causing major damage[复数] to the forest.

Moreover, the job created by salavaging[拼写错误] logging will prefer empolyees [拼写错误]with training rather than local people, and therefore, it also fails to stimulate the economy[说清楚,是local economy]
