作文批改前:

It is Better to Specialize in One Specific Subject Than to Have Broad Knowledge in Many Subjects

As Yeats put it, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”, to light the talent fire of each student is an ultimate goal of education, but in terms of methods of lighting, no one has draw a certain conclusion. Some people believe that broad knowledge of many academic subjects will help students to build rounded personality, while others might think that specialize in one specific subject will bring better outcomes. Personally, I agree with the second idea that one should try his or her best in a specific subject, for the following three reasons.

First, with an increasingly clear division in human capital, only people with specific knowledge and skills can fit the demand of the society. High-tech companies need smart and creative programmer; law firms require young talents with profound knowledge in various dimensions of law; a diploma from an undergraduate school cannot guarantee one a decent job any more, as more academic achievements are needed for the sake of hunting a job. Unlike centuries ago, when most people were in the same field of agriculture, people today have numberless choices for their careers. Different job requires different knowledge, and better knowledge in a specific subject will lead to an easier success.

Second, one will have sufficient time and energy in grasping knowledge in one subject as much as possible to be excellent . Knowledge is infinite, whereas one’s time and energy are finite. No one can do great in every aspects. Think about the hill-like piles of documents an accountant has to go through everyday, isn’t it troublesome if he also want to spend three hour a day practicing in order to become a good athlete? Getting knowledge in several fields is a hard task, needless to say broad knowledge of many subjects. It doesn't matter if a linguistic isn't good at maths, or a singer doesn't know much about science. But it do matter if one spend most of his or her time in learning various of subjects and actually get little in each one, because that could be meaningless.

Granted, gaining knowledge in many subjects can avoid us from being an idiot in some specific areas, and acquiring common senses in biology, physics, chemistry, history, geology and other subjects are vital to one’s life. But that doesn't mean that we should treat all of them equally and academically. We could find what we are really interested in among a variety of subjects, but once we find our preference, trying hard to specialize in one subject will help us to stand out from others.

The magic of specializing in one specific subject lies in cooperation. It won’t be a problem when we encounter something we have little knowledge about, as we still have each other when we need help. Especially in this information era, one can easily find some experts to give him a hand.
