In some areas, such as mathematic, physics, it is more important for students understand ideas and concepts, for there are too many facts to learn and most of them can be learned by understanding the concepts and theory thoroughly. For example, if a student can understand Newton's movement theory, it is unecessary for him or her to remember many facts which can be conducted and predict by the movement theory.Instead, one who can remember lots of facts does not certainly understand the regulations and ideas behind those facts, and is not able to learn the essential theory in a certain area. That is why some teachers of mathematic or physics always put emphasis on the explanation of theory and concepts.
Nevertheless, in some other area, such as history and literature, it is more important for students to learn facts than it is for them understand ideas and concepts. Although there may be some definitions and theories in those area, they are limited and can only apply for some facts or some aspects of a event. Remembering the time, location and participants for big events is basic requirement for students who majors in history. Learning specific events and compaigns can help a students ton understand some phenomena of history more clearly. For example, it is more important for a student to learn the World War Two, including the cause, effects and many aspects of the war.
In conclusion, it would be rigid to claim that understanding ideas and concepts or learning facts is more important than another for students.
