The writer makes the point that beavers should not be released in England, on the contrary, the professor demonstrates a different idea that releasing beavers actually has more advantages over disadvantages.
Initially, the professor refutes the viewpoint showed in the passage by saying that blocking the water flow is not something that should be worried, because beavers will not build dams in every river, and many of such rivers are still. Besides, blocking the water flow helps protect young fish from their predators. This is converse with the main idea in the reading passage that beavers will block the water flow by using wood to build dams, which will lead to the decline of fish population.
Another important point showed in the reading material is that beavers dig holes in ground, which is bad for farmland because of the erosion they cause in this way. But the professor presents a conflicting idea that beavers actually are beneficial to farmland because erosion happens not so frequently for beavers help slow down the water flow.
Finally, the professor states that beavers are not detrimental to tress. To be specific, beavers help form a new ecosystem by stimulating the growth of new plants and developing a more diversified vegetation. This challenges the standpoint made by the writer who says that beavers’ teeth are so strong that they will burrow in trees and thus kill the trees.(233 words)
