答案

The reading passage expresses the idea that Mercury, which is a kind of substance used by dentist to repair teeth, should be banned. There are three reasons. First, Mercury is harmful to individuals’ health because it may affect central nerve system if absorbed by human bodies, causing a series of diseases. The second reason is about environmental issues. The Mercury used in clinics is disposed of down drains, which may pollute the environment and threat wildlife. Finally, substitutes for mercury can be easily found. Many types of materials, like porcelain or gold, can replace it. However, the opinions in the reading section are strongly refuted by the listening section. To begin with, Mercury does not have detrimental effects to human health because only an extremely small amount of Mercury can be absorbed by human, which means that it may not result in serious consequences. In some cases, patients are allergic to this substance, but the percentage is very small. In addition, the environmental problems can be avoided if a newly-developed device, namely S开头的专有名词, is used to collect the solids before they are washed off. Third, although there are several substitutes, this substance has its own unique benefits-it is more effective and lasts for a long time. By comparison, other materials, like gold, are too pricy.
