Do you agree or not with the statement that a leader should have stong opinions and not change his/he opinions?
Unlike the traditional organizations where the leader decided everything, modern companies encourage democracy that leaders welcome innovative suggestions from staff. In some cases, in order to encourage staff to think creatively, there are special rewards for anyone who proposes contributing ideas. Nevertheless, concerning the effectiveness of a leader, he/she should still be determined, not easily affected by others’ opinions.
To begin with, a leader makes strategic plans, which directs the organization and is unchangeable. A strategic plan is an organization’s process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. It may also extend to control mechanisms for guiding the implementation of the strategy, which may probably last for over five years or longer. Considering the significance of a strategic plan, it is unchangeable no matter how democratic the leader is.
Moreover, effective employees should make the strategic plan the leader made possible rather than deny it in the process. When a strategic plan is finalized, the organization should work wholeheartedly together for the implementation of the plan rather than deny it. Some experts in career pursuing indicate that the most effective staff will seek out for solutions rather than propose questions. Therefore, once the decision is made, the leader shall not change it, but the staff should try best to realize it, a good demonstration of teamwork and effectiveness.
Furthermore, a leader keeps adjusting his opinion according to others’ judgement is not reliable enough. In most cases, the whole team relies on the decision the leader made to proceed. But if the decision is adjusted in a multiple of times, the members are confused and they will even doubt on the judgement of the leader. In order to maintain his/her authority in the team, a leader should persist in the original decision and try every means to realize it. After all, even if the decision is changed, the result will not be possibly better off than the original one.
To conclude, although modern company prompts democracy, an effective leader should not change his/her opinion all the time and being determined gives the team members confidence in their leader.
