When leading a group, most people talk while others listen. But best leaders always spend more listening others’ ideas. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
What contribute to the success of those TOP 500 companies on the Forbes Board? Referring to this question, one factor is usually included in CEO’s answers—that is, a good leader. Then, what is a good leader? Is an effective leader the one that will always spend more listening others’ ideas? My answer is yes. First of all, an effective leader should be the one that lead his/her members to reach high level of satisfaction. Among all these factors contribute to the level of satisfaction. A sense of achievement is needed to gain satisfaction according to Maslow’s theory. And, being a part of making decisions can definitely boost member’s sense of achievement. For instance, the leader of our department usually would listen to our opinions and then make decisions, which greatly boost our sense of achievement and productivity. In addition, an effective leader should be the one that make wise decisions and enable the team to fabricate delicate products. A wise decision usually demands collective efforts and intelligence instead of an individual’s. Across the long history of China, kings as the leader of the government, who were keen on dictatorship and refused to listen to other’s opinions, tended to form defective policies. It is clearly that collective intelligence is necessary for an effective leader. Admittedly, when facing some emergent events, leaders have to have quick reaction, those decisions without listening to others’ opinions. However, most of the time, for those long-term projects, an effective leader should make members part of making decisions, for the most proper and sustainable decision in the long run. To sum up, to take the satisfaction of employees as well as the rationality of the final decision into consideration, a wise should spend some time listening to others and make the most suitable decision for the development of the company.
