Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: In order to make ourselves happy, we should learn how to make others happy first.
People have been pursuing happiness in such a short life-time, and they have different ways of achieve it. Some could be extremely selfish while they can also live a happy life, but someone could be crazy generous while they are also happy with that, and they gain satisfaction by making others happy. In my view, the latter would be a better way to gain happiness for the following three reasons. To begin with, making others happy will bring self-worth and respect to ourselves. Humor has been regarded by most people as a kind of ability and those who are humorous can gain high popularity among a group of people. By amusing others, one can feel that they are needed by others and thus develop a sense of self-fulfillment. Besides, those who can make others laugh are usually considered to be intelligent, therefore, they would gain more respect from others. With high popularity, these people will definitely be happier than selfish people. Moreover, for people who choose to be selfish to obtain happiness will only gain a sense of 'happiness' from pleasure, but this type of happiness will not last long, since they will soon be despised by others. For example, naughty children would try to gain their own pleasure by doing annoying things like throwing stones into others’ gardens, which could make themselves laugh at that moment. However, they would soon be punished by adults and feel ashamed of what they have done. Thus, if we only care about ourselves, we may not be able to gain true happiness. Thirdly, there is a far greater spectrum of levels of happiness that just cannot be reached through selfishness but only through giving, awareness and compassion. Selfish can sometimes bring us advantages, but these advantages are not equal to happiness. It is not rare to see that some stingy and rich people are not really happy, while those who care about others can always gain respect from others and live a happier life. Therefore, happiness is not about taking advantage of others but about giving. To conclude, in order to gain true happiness, we should learn how to make others happy. Only by giving and devotion can we feel satisfied with life.
